Ashley Bowman will do anything
and everything she can to stop her late grandmother’s Florida Keys holiday
resort being knocked down by a developer – even chain herself to a tree on the
grounds just as a hurricane is about to hit. Once she meets Roman Diaz, she’s
determined to prove to him exactly how his plans are going to affect the
elderly community who have been visiting the resort for years – even if it
means she has to drag him across the country to do it.
Roman is resigned to the fact
that he’s going to be touring the country on a stranger’s whim. He’s willing to
let her – and allow the renovation work be delayed in the process – because he’s
confident that he’s going to win. What Roman doesn’t expect is to be drawn to the
incredible energy that Ashley exudes like a magnet; her disordered life is the
exact opposite of what he’s used to and what he’s come to expect, yet he’s
inexplicably attracted and helpless to do anything about it.
Ruthie Knox was always going to
tackle serials well – why would I have ever doubted it? She’s an author that
doesn’t disappoint and if you’re new to her work, this would be the perfect
book to get started. It might seem
like a wonderfully light, fluffy, funny contemporary romance (and for the most
part, it is) yet like all her other novels, it’s got an amazing depth that’s
hard to match.
It was a little hard relating to
Ashley. She’s a woman who relishes having no firm ties and so when her
childhood home is about to be knocked down, she’s suddenly finding herself
doing all she can to stop it. I’m not even sure I liked her very much, outside
of the context of the book and so it made for interesting reading.
Like her other novels, Roman Holiday has got funny dialogue,
hot sex, wonderful writing and a beautiful message. I might not have connected
as well with the characters as I had with others, but that didn’t mean that I didn’t
enjoy the book any less. The secondary romances are just as entertaining as the
main characters and Ms Knox is really a writer who gets you to root for the
underdog. Roman Holiday didn’t manage
to match or beat Deeper or Harder, but I honestly don’t mind.
